I like your point about how though you were by no means the best on the team, it ended up with you becoming a very proficient swimmer. Another thing that pops into my mind---the best way to get good at something is to surround yourself with people who are better at it than you. Another thing that pops into my mind—the best way to get good at something is to surround yourself with people who are better at it than you. When you joined the swim team, that’s what you did, and you learned a ton.
